You can extract the data taking out the HD and stick it into an USB enclosure that you can plug in any PC or your new laptop

Asunto: [Ma-linux] Compaq Laptop Problems

All,

I have a Compaq Presario C500 laptop that has seen better days.
Currently even the power connection is not working anymore.  The battery is dead, but, with a good power connection, I could charge it up.  I was able until recently to power up the laptop by jiggling the cord connection to the laptop.  Now I can't even do that.

Other problems include a somewhat busted hinge and a few vertical lines across the screen.  As I said, the laptop has seen better days.

I would like to have a working laptop.

What are my options?  Replace said laptop?  Get it repaired someplace?  Get a used, refurbished replacement?  If I do replace the laptop, how can I get files off said laptop?  Could someplace slip in a battery temporarily to help start up the laptop and then transfer files?

Money is a very important factor currently.  It might not be forever, but it is now.

Best,

Chuck Divine
