I've had success with Xming[1] -- to the point where a windows program
can be considered "successful". It did do its job faithfully most of the
time, but it did crash on occasion (sometimes it appeared to crash,
popping up the "Xming has to close..." dialog, but would continue
functioning normally). YMMV and all that.

The best part of Xming was the portability, though. I could have it
side-by-side with PuTTY Portable on a USB stick and get fluxbox wherever
I needed it.
