Well, one can register a domain for $8/yr retail (I'm sure the folks
registering them in bulk pay much less.) One way to solve the issue is
just to raise the price of domains. But then, who gets that money? Then

Naa, the WWW is still free...you don't need your own domain to host a
website. PuTTY springs to mind--it doesn't have its own domain:

I guess I don't think that paying a squatter a few hundred for a name is
all that bad, especially when one can make something up and get a domain
for $8...
