Or perhaps a long-term support version of the same distribution?  The 
June 2006 Ubuntu LTS 6.06 release (aka Dapper Drake) doesn't fall off 
support until June 2009.  Personally, unless I'm running cutting-edge 
hardware, I like to install the next-to-most-recent release, on the 
assumption that it's had time to age.  That said, I have a 
"disposable" machine that I re-install frequently with a variety of 
systems and that often has the most recent Kubuntu on it (but I'm not 
starting the "KDE vs. Gnome" discussion!), and I find it to be quite reliable.
