[Novalug] cd burner not working on linux side of dual boot

I have Ubuntu Feisty

Sometime in the last several months a couple of CD related things have 
happened.

(1) As the normal user (not su) I cannot eject a cd that was in the drive 
when I booted.

(2) Newly loaded CD's do not appear on the desktop, only under /media

(3) I cannot get the cd burning programs to work. On the other hand I can 
burn a CD from the other boot.

Trying to burn an iso image:

For example if I run FXBurn it opens up, I select the image, select the 
CDR drive the program instantly indicates that the burn has been done.

Where do I start looking to troubleshoot.
