 	Dunno 'bout your area in that decade, but in this one in 
the following, it was common for houses to be built with various 
kinds of electric heating -- which might mean lots of wires 
running in particular through the floors/ceilings. In my house 
(1970) and that of a friend in town, if you want wireless on 
three floors, you have to have an access point on each.

 	If you find an old, long disused thermostat in each room, 
that's a pretty good sign of the problem.

 	If you don't, you might try running a metal detector over 
all your floors. I don't know how sensitive those are; I wouldn't 
trust a negative result, but I would a positive one.
