[Novalug] Who needs Windows Home Server with Linux around?

Is there a GUI way to configure Samba user accounts? Every time I set up Samba, I find I have to go to the commandline and type:

sudo /usr/bin/smbpasswd -a xxx

I also tend to want to have anything saved by a user editable by the group, so I have to manually edit the smb.conf file and add:

 create mask = 0664
 directory mask = 0775

To each shared directory.

Is there another way to do these things in Ubuntu or other distributions through the GUI?

Until this kind of thing becomes simple, the door is wide open for products like WHS!

Thanks,
Igor

- interesting article... looks like anyone

Interesting:
Micros??t says they like and will support it, so everybody else now likes it.
When in fact the Banking System has been using that form of network authentication for years now as one level of network security systems.

IOW Nothing new here other them the Emperor now likes something:

- honestly though, i've never really been satisfied
with the setup and use of SMB in either client or
server mode under Linux - although i imagine Samba is
a convenience for many LANs...

For simple network file sharing between local Linux server(s) and M$-Widows clients Samba is one of the simpler ways to handle things.

For Linux to Linux the newer CIFS protocol works nicely and look very much like a NFS share. {-: I haven't as of yet even tried M$ export to Linux. <GRIN>

- one thing i have noticed over the last few years (in
regards to network printing) is less of a reliance on
print server set up - seems like most US$300+ printers
provide built-in facilities with a variety of
protocols...

For network printing I like to use a CUPS server, as I've found it simple to setup, plus both Linux and M$-XP(normally) will talk to them.

I've even had the case where both a M$-XP and Linux systems would talk to another M$-XP system sharing a PRINTER{low cost home type system} and a Portable running Vista would totally REFUSE to talk to the XP system sharing the printer.

So if M$-Vista is involved any more, I just tell them to find someone else to trouble shoot there problems, it's just not worth my time.
