One way of "pinning" a package is to make a dummy package with no files, 
with a version number 100 greater than the real version, and "install" it.

Another way is to administratively remove it: rpm -e --justdb sacred-package

Of course, you will forget you did this, so it's a crappy solution, and 
doesn't help if other packages need it as a dependency.
