Eeeewwwwwww! Not your fault, not your problem, but I've run into this
issue in Xft as well (Xft uses colors with an alpha channel, but I'd
really rather have all that separate from fonts, thank you!) If you
happen to have any suggestions for dealing with color sanely, I'd love
to hear about it.
We do have color-instance objects, but I guess that would not be
GNU-compatible.
I'd also be happy to hear that none of the applications you've seen
would much care what we do.
