Moving the S&M files into configure.ac is something that I plan to do, but not

In this particular situation this is not the case. Some previous developer
added code to run the s&m files through CPP and turn certain #defines back
into shell variables (see CPP_to_sh in autoconf.ac), one of which is
SYSTEM_MALLOC. This trick is also done on Darwin, BTW.
Ville, I take your point about ia64 and will add it to the commit. However,
it's only a minor matter because XEmacs on Itanium has far more problems then
just system malloc.
