Hi,
One of the currently open Gentoo bugs for XEmacs 21.4 has to do with the
redefinition of register in src/lisp.h on ia64. I don't have access to
this architecture so I can't check myself, but the bug report contains a
good description of the problem:

I had a quick look in src/lisp.h myself, and I found it interesting to see
that the code that is currently enabled is the DEBUG_XEMACS code. It seems
that using the non-debug variant would solve this particular problem, but
this may have other repercussions. It would be great if someone could have
a look at this.

I can't speak to the register problem at the moment.
Since --debug adds a small amount of code at very little cost in speed
but a huge improvement in debuggability, it's enabled by default. If
you turn it off, in a significant minority of bugs in the C code you'll
be told to turn it on, rebuild, and reproduce, or we can't help you.

problems, so it would be great if someone else could comment on that.
Regarding the debug issue: turning debugging on or off doesn't matter in
this case. Here's the relevant code from src/lisp.h:

All the ifdef's are commented out, so suggesting that debugging to be
turned off as a workaround here won't work. All of this is from the 21.4
code, BTW.

around the problem:

I can't personally verify this because I don't have access to ia64
hardware, but I've asked the original bug reporter for verification.

I've gotten back feedback from the OP, and he indicated that the problem
got solved by moving from 21.4.15 to 21.4.17. Apologies for not checking
whether he used a recent version to begin with.
