Stephen, I think something went slightly awry with your latest xft
patch. I did not specify xft support, and the latest 21.5 build fails
for me on my linux box like so:

As I wrote, I built successfully with plain X, but unfortunately I
don't ever build in my integration workspace. There's basic breakage
in the build system, which demands manual updates of src/depend, and I
forgot to do that.
This file really, really should be automatically regenerated by
configure. I assume the reason it's not is that our dependency
generator is a perl script, and there was an age when you couldn't
require perl. Does anybody know of any good reason not to have
configure regenerate src/depend when it's making the Makefiles?
Norbert has already fixed src/depend in CVS for me. Thanks, Norbert!

Nope. We've (SXEmacs) been doing it since May, last year without any
adverse affects.

I would expect that on Linux and free BSDs. I guess you probably have
some level of support for Solaris and Mac OS X I know is mostly
working. Any others?

Not enough to have ever gotten a complete build report on either.
Solaris has turned out to be a huge PITA for us. None of the active
developers use it, and the couple of people who've reported problems
with Solaris either don't have the time or the knowledge to help us
fix it.
And you are the only one I know who has tried to build on Mac
OS/X.:-)
Any others?
None that I can think of. And especially none where I wouldn't expect
Perl to be part of a default install.

Well, I suppose that you are assuming that I don't read xemacs-beta
every day. You would be wrong. I can't believe I wasted the last
couple of months helping you guys fixing your stupid linux-centric
bugs in sxemacs. Never again!

I guess using the compiler for generating the dependencies is an
impossible way to go with all types of different compilers out there?
But if the auto generation can be smart enough not to stop the build
if perl is missing I guess there is not much harm in having a
dependency on perl!?

I don't understand how this comment is relevant. Whether or not you
read xemacs-beta makes no difference to me. It certainly has no
bearing on what I post here.
