Hi folks,
I'm one of the maintainers of TNT, an IM client for Emacs.

I use TNT daily on two machines, but in the last few days I am unable
to establish a connection from my laptop. The connection attempt never
returns an error, but nothing seems to happen.
If I quit XEmacs, I see the expected process list:
Proc Status Buffer Tty Command
---- ------ ------ --- -------
toc open (none) (none) network stream connection 5190(a)toc.oscar.aol.com
...and the "active processes exist; kill them and exit anyway" question.
Under the hood, we connect to AIM as follows:
(setq tocstr-process (open-network-stream "toc" nil host port))

I'm running
XEmacs 21.4 (patch 13) "Rational FORTRAN" [Lucid] (i586-pc-win32) of Sun May
25 2003 on TSUNAMI
...though I just downloaded and installed 21.4.19, and it exhibits the
same problem. And TNT definitely still works fine on my desktop, which
is on the same network as the laptop! However, I can telnet to
toc.oscar.aol.com 5190 from the laptop just fine.
I've rebooted; I've run -vanilla; I've done everything I can think of and
it has no effect. And again, this machine has been super-stable and TNT
has been very reliable, until a couple of days ago. Nothing has changed
on this machine in that time.
I know this is a weird problem description, but does anyone have any
ideas what could be happening, or how I might start debugging this?
(Oddly enough, I've had to move to Emacs for other reasons but I keep a
copy of XEmacs running only to use TNT! Emacs never establishes a
connection for me; the symptoms are very similar to this though the cause
may well be completely different.)

Hi Scott,
Are you saying that neither Emacs nor XEmacs works on the laptop? That
sounds like some some recent software upgrade outside XEmacs has broken
something.
Some details of the laptop's configuration would also be helpful in
tracking down the problem.

Emacs doesn't work for me on this or any other machine, and hasn't for
some time. The entire TNT team sees this problem in one way or another
and we haven't been able to track it down. I don't think it's related to
the recent XEmacs issues I'm having. I probably shouldn't have mentioned
it -- don't want to confuse the issue.
The laptop is a Thinkpad running Win XP. Windows Firewall is disabled.
Other AIM clients work fine (though, to be fair, most use a different
protocol than TNT). I'm also able to telnet to toc.oscar.aol.com port
5190 with no problem, though simulating a login by hand is a little tricky
(lots of control characters) so I haven't tried it.
I realize that this seems like it must be a non-XEmacs problem, but
there's nothing I can point at. TNT does pretty vanilla network stuff
via XEmacs, and that stuff isn't working while every other network thing
I do is working fine.
Ideas welcome!

Do you employ any kind of debugging in TNT? If not, you could use
something like this... (lifted directly from eicq-v8.el)

to inspect the packets going in and out.

We do have code like that. And I don't believe *anything* is coming back
from the original connection, as far as I can tell. I probably want to
re-examine the code to be sure I have debug everywhere I should.

Hm, it might be interesting to try a Cygwin build of XEmacs and see if it
repros the problem...
