both save not only the current symbol or widget but all other
customized variables as well.
Is there a way to only save that one symbol or widget?

What do you mean by save? Write to custom-file?

No. Saving the custom data will always replace the complete lisp forms
in the custom file. However it only saves the 'saved-value value so
the net-effect should be the same.
Provided of course the 'saved-value settings actually reflect the
correct state as poor Alex Schroeder found out recently.

Possibly. For me, doing any save from Custom takes seconds on a PII
450MHz, which is ridiculous.
There's also the fact that it relies on the state of XEmacs being
correct, and does no sanity-check against the existing file. 3.5kB of
lost customization is ... well, let's just say I'm going to propose
Alex for sainthood after his display of good humor.

I want to only save customizations of a certain custom-group (and it's
member hierarchy) to custom-file.
I don't want to dump out all these unrelated variables to this
separate custom-file as well.
I found
custom-save-delete
and maybe that's the way to go.
But all this seems a bit contorted.
It's really hard to find the way through custom.

Seems like custom needs an emergency repair mechanism.

For my build package
(http://www.xemacs.org/Documentation/packages/html/build.html) I want
to support multiple build-settings, because it takes considerable time
for the user to customize all aspects of the build process, be it UNIX
or Windows, GNU Tools or Windows Tools.
I thought about offering the user to save each build-settings set in
its own file.
Then I thought saving custom forms in the setting files would be a
good choice.
This might explain where I was coming from.
Meanwhile I am starting to think about storing build-settings sets in
an alist, to/from which one will save/restore the active
build-settings.
This still doesn't feel quite right.
I guess I'll meditate over it a bit more.

I think you want Jan's customize themes, it should be able to do that
