Hi,
Gentoo has recently switched no using position independent code generation and
in addition to that maybe other updates as well like new version of gcc
etc. Whatever has changed both 21.4 and 21.5 ebuilds now fail due to different
reasons but both fail in the dump step ether by core dumping or by hanging for
ever.
I have create the following two tickets in the gentoo bug tracker where you
will find some more info (but I can of course create more info if needed.)

I have tried to compile with using the -fno-pie flag in order to go back to
position dependent code but that did not do the trick.
I need some suggestions on how to debug this and even better some ideas what
can cause this and how to fix this.
This is a show stopper for XEmacs on Gentoo since moving to the new Gentoo
profile requires rebuild of all packages.

It’s now spelled -no-pie on this Debian machine; maybe that’s the root of
it.
Can you put the output of configure, or a config.log from the 21.5 build
somewhere? Your text at https://bugs.gentoo.org/639642 doesn’t include a
Mercurial changeset ID, which suggests it may not be tip.
I’ll try to get the 21.4 code building on Linux in the next few days.
I need some suggestions on how to debug this and even better some
ideas what

The Gentoo ebuild is based on the latest released version of XEmacs 21.5. ie
21.5.34, plus some small patches applied. So it is not the tip.
I see in hg log that there has been some things added that relates to dumping
and pie so maybe these changes are important to have to be able to build it
now.
I have no problem building the tip version of 21.5 and the buildbot builds it
fine to. Maybe no surprise since it is on the same machines as I build
manually.
I’ll try to get the 21.4 code building on Linux in the next few days.
Great. When I build 21.4 manually I get another problem as for the ebuild.
You might want to look at the patches we have for 21.4 on Gentoo when trying
to build it:

seen something about that in hg logs. Could it be that you already fixed that?

Thanks. I have already pushed fixes to Gentoo but I will look into that diff
for future enhancements (or maybe fixing my fix! :-)
I now read it that the ASLR fixes I was seeing is actually disabling the
default PIE behavior of the compiler/linker. I was hoping for a fix for
allowing PIE but maybe that is not doable?
I have got the (wrong!?) impression that this has been fixed for GNU Emacs.
But from a very quick look at the GNU Emacs sources it seems that this can
boil down to just disabling it by using -no-pie for temacs. Can you shed some
light on this?
