Dear Bug Team!
I am running XEmacs 21.4.4 with all the latest packages, and find that
in Gnus to make the "o" (Save article) command work, I need to have
apel and tm installed. In particular, the comment in the package list
for tm says that Gnus >= 5.8.0 doesn't need it. I have Gnus 5.8.8, and
in order to save articles I need tm. tm in turn needs apel.

I don't think it should be needed. What made you believe that? Do
you got a backtrace or similar?

This turned out to be interesting. Gnus uses RMAIL for saving
articles to files. But the RMAIL package in XEmacs requires TM and
APEL. I think Gnus is incompatible with TM and APEL.
Why do RMAIL requires TM/APEL?
Maybe the functions Gnus needs from RMAIL could be moved to mail-lib?

While we're at it, vm winds up loading lots of files in APEL if you
convert a rmail file to vm. In particular poe.el in APEL redefines a
large number of functions, like require. If you have advised any of
the functions that poe.el redefines then it breaks badly. This is
because poe.el does stuff like

Symbol-function does not return the real function definition if the
function has been advised. I was rather annoyed when I finally
tracked down this particular problem.

Because they're all three fundamentally broken together. APEL is a
basically good idea that is not sufficiently robustly implemented, and
TM depends on it, and RMAIL depends on TM for all MIME services.
Neither APEL nor TM can be effectively unloaded, either.

This might be a good idea, depending on whether we make any attempt to
keep RMAIL synched to GNU Emacs. It might also be possible to get rid
of the TM dependency in RMAIL if you're only moving whole messages
around, and don't need to parse MIME. That should get rid of the APEL
dependency. It would probably be easier to keep such an RMAIL synched.

Advice is a generally less invasive way to make upward compatible
changes to functions. Advice has all kinds of bells & whistles for
controlling advised functions.

symbol-function just returns what is stored in the function slot.
This interacts badly when a function has been advised, but the
function is redefined without using advice.
Here is an example, with require renamed foo-require to protect the
innocent.

The problem here is that 'defun' notices that the function is advised,
and so redefines the original function. symbol-function gets the
advised function in the function slot of the symbol. The global
foo-require calls ad-Orig-foo-require, which calls the redefined
foo-require which calls si:foo-require, which is the advised function.

I'm not contesting that; I'm saying that using a given piece of advice
over time is likely to break because people change the original
function out from under you.
You could argue that once a function has been defined, all changes
should be done by the advice mechanism. :-)
I'm not sure what should happen with the defun/advice/new defun
interaction you describe, I'll keep it in mind.
