Will everyone please try out the latest 21.4 as checked into source
control? I am particularly interested in people who maintain XEmacs
packages, i.e. netbsd, gentoo, cygwin, native Windows setup kit (oops
- that's me!), etc.
Here's what I'm hoping you'll do:
1. hg clone https://bitbucket.org/xemacs/xemacs-21.4
2. cd xemacs-21.4
3. apply whatever patches you want/need
4. configure [options]
5. make
And send your results to the xemacs-beta list.
Please also send the patches you apply to xemacs-beta, so I can review
those patches for general suitability.
My hope is to release 21.4.24 sometime in the near future and to
declare 21.4.24 as the final 21.4 release.

Kubuntu 10.04, no patch applied compilation runs without problems.
Xemacs -vanilla starts.

I would rather not make this change in Makefile.in.in. Shouldn't this
happen through configure? Why isn't LDFLAGS already part of ld_switch_all
when automake is run. Ditto with LIBOSSAUDIO.

Well, it turns out that the LDFLAGS addition is not necessary for the
build - it has been added before.
The LIBOSSAUDIO, though, is dangling - it is set by a successful
autoconf test, but never used anywhere else. I think configure.in needs
to define a has_ossaudio, and act on that by extending LIB or similar.
My auto fu is limited - I could propose a patch, but you probably
wouldn't like it. ;)

Well, every configure script is a rich set of examples - you only need
to understand what ideas they exemplify...
And in the end, battling pkgsrc to run autoconf during the build was
harder than the trial-and-error procedure to find the right macro.

Worked fine both with my full environment and with -vanilla after a
quick check. Here is the script I used after the hg clone:

The dump-paths patch is not mine but from Enrico Scholz. That
and the check-features patch allow you to build xemacs with xemacs
installed.
The lib64 patch is only required for the x86_64 arch.
The mod-shift patch has been formally rejected, so I will not include
it here.
The extra-buttons patch adds extra buttons (8-11). I bought a mouse
with, well, extra buttons. I never liked the mouse though.

applied for 21.4.22 in Gentoo.
I know this is lame but I don't want to miss the patch train if
possible. So please bear with me. What I would like to have done is to
check the patches that does not apply whether they need to be redone
or if they are already included upstream. Now I have to settle with
just reporting the state of affairs for 21.4.22 and how they turn out
when applied to 21.4.23.

It passes my rigorous, well not really, test suite ie it compiles in
the form of an ebuild and I can start it and even do some minor

Dear Hauke,
Thanks for the info. Since I just went to the trouble of getting the
.texi files to compile with v5.2, I'd consider applying a patch that
works for both v4.8 and v5.2. Failing that, I guess you can choose
to:
a) apply a platform-specific patch for v4.8, or
b) avoid the last round of texinfo-only patches

Hi Vin --
This compiles and runs fine for me on 32 bit Mac OS 10.6.8, on Cygwin in an XP
virtual machine that I keep around, and on a 64-bit Ubuntu machine. I attach
the Installation files from all three. make check works fine too. I haven’t
been able to provoke it to use the progress bar, I believe I avoided
installing Xaw because of the associated XEmacs crashes.

control? I am particularly interested in people who maintain XEmacs
packages, i.e. netbsd, gentoo, cygwin, native Windows setup kit (oops
- that's me!), etc.
Here's what I'm hoping you'll do:
1. hg clone https://bitbucket.org/xemacs/xemacs-21.4
2. cd xemacs-21.4
3. apply whatever patches you want/need
4. configure [options]
5. make
And send your results to the xemacs-beta list.
Please also send the patches you apply to xemacs-beta, so I can review
those patches for general suitability.
My hope is to release 21.4.24 sometime in the near future and to
declare 21.4.24 as the final 21.4 release.
