I know what you mean :-) Another ghost-in-the-machine thing I got today you'd probably like to know: I was applying again my splash buffer patch to startup.el and menubar-items.el, and suddenly, temacs dropped core when looking for docstring pointers. The symptom was a failed assertion in lisp.h line 717. Under gdb, I got in compiled_function_documentation[1], with a doc_and_interactive field that was visibly corrupted (pobj would fail on it). I don't think I've changed anything from then, but the next compilation worked again ....
