Naturally, I did not remember, but when it happened a few more times I
tried to figure what may have triggered the problem ... Unfortunately, no
pattern here... One time I was clicking the "File" meanu, the other time I
did nothing - the xemacs window was not even in focus. The only subprocess
that was started (not before it froze, but in the beginning of xemacs session)
was clearcase.

P.S. BTW, I talked to a friend of mine who exes Xemacs in similar
configuration ( with  ClearCase) and he says that he has similar problems
on Linux. He also added that there is no such problem on Solaris

P.P.S. I will try to get a backtrace with gdb next time the problem occure.

Ah.  Do you remember what you were doing right before it froze up?
(Specifically, did you start some subprocess via a compilation, grep,
