actually, cvs from last night + Andy's patch for Ray.
it's odd, the xemacs + gnus has run all day.
xemacs + vm has crashed about 5 times today.
I think that the problem is higher up in redisplay (maybe related to the
crash Kirill reported), but here is some bandaid that might diagnose the
problem more
easily.
