Martin (and maybe Ben) put some effort into getting rid of the s/m
files. Not a lot (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). Martin
definitely wanted rid of them.
twas martin more recently. i did some work awhile ago.
however, it's not so easy to just "get rid of" them. typically,
you have to remove one type of item at a time.
