It's not latin-unity, I hope; by design, latin-unity does not pay any attention at all to files being read, and it doesn't change anything without asking you if it's OK on write. Ben Wing submitted a patch a day or so ago to correct a problem he found with recognizing coding cookies in .elcs---if this isn't your bug, it's a twin son of different mother.
