I built 21.5.28 on my Mac this evening (Mac OS X 10.4.10, Apple's X11).
When I open VM the face for the header values is ugly (small, slanted, sans
serif).  I tried globally changing the font to courier, but those faces
didn't change.  See the two attached JPEG snapshots.  The first is from
v.28, the second from v.27.  I see a call to (custom-set-faces) in my
~/.xemacs/custom.el.  I don't know what the source of its face
specifications are (it's called with no args).  I don't see any other face
manipulation code in my init.el or custome.el files.d

The default face got changed from courier to lucidatypewriter recently.  You can change that by changing line 2404 (or thereabouts) of faces.c, although I think that setting it with Xresources should work as well.

PS something forgot to remove the fcc: line from your message, the From field was
a *little* messed up
